Week Commencing 14th September 2020
This week we have read We're All Wonders by R J Palacio. As a class we have been thinking about other words that we could use as well as 'wonder', and came up with wonderful, amazing, fantastic, brilliant and 'good at things'. The children created their own 'Wonder' themed picture of themselves, filled with all the things that make them a wonder or the things that they think are a wonder. They have also drawn some beautiful pictures of their family which we have mounted and displayed in simple house shaped wooden frames. We have had some simple space themed activities out including catching stars in our finger gym activity, threading beads on to our number star wands, and small world space play. The children have explored a range of scented play dough based creative activities including 'autumn hedgehog' dough and 'make a face' dough exploring emotions further. They have enjoyed the ice cream parlour role play outside and exploring fruit and herbs in our mud kitchen. The children have also had fun having a go at a rhythm activity combining music and Phase 1 Phonics. We have played The Three Little Pigs board game and played sound lotto in teams.

Spring 2020
January to March 2020
This term we will be explore the topic 'People Who Help Us'. The children discussed the theme before Christmas and came up with some lovely ideas about jobs and roles that they would like to explore which have been included in the topic overview on the Medium Term planning page. So far we have looked at how families and friends help us, and thought about how grateful we are for what they do. The children have also enjoyed exploring the role of teachers through role play. We have met Katy, a surgical nurse, Heather, a dental hygienist and Tracey, a Police Community Support Officer. They came in to talk to the children about what they do and brought in some equipment for the children to look at. After half term we are looking forward to meeting more people who help us including Diane who will be helping us learn about recycling, how to do it and what happens to our recycling once its taken away!
We have also been learning about Chinese New Year and nature, thinking about things that are living, once living and never living.

Autumn 2019
October to December 2019
For the second half of the Autumn term we have been celebrating a range of Autumn and Winter festivals in our topic, Festival of Lights. Below you find photos of a range of activities the children have taken part in including activities for Diwali, Bonfire's Night, Remembrance Day and Christmas. We have also spent time learning about road safety and taken part in simple anti-bullying activities with an emphasis on being kind to others.
September to October 2019
We have had an amazing start to the school year! Our topic this term is 'A Splash of Colour' which will enable the children to explore themes of colour and creativity through their interests. We started with a picture book being used to inspire learning throughout the school, Flotsam by David Wiesner. The children created under the sea themed portholes and it was soon clear that their imagination was taking them off in the direction of 'pirates' which we supported by providing the children with a selection of pirate-themed activities including message in a bottle writing, treasure in sand-foam, treasure maps, role play props and dress-up and a very special pirate dress-up day!
Just make a mark and see where it takes you...
We have also read 'The Dot' by Peter H. Reynolds, as well as 'Ish' and 'Sky Colour'. These books have really inspire the children's creativity and they have been exploring lots of different painting and collage techniques. Below is a display created by the children using a range of different techniques and colours. We then moved on to looking at Pointillism and trying different techniques to create pictures with dots!
Finger Gym
Finger gym is a great opportunity for children to practice their hand-eye coordination, fine manipulation, pre-writing and writing skills. There are always opportunities for other learning to take part here including number and shape recognition as well as turn taking.
