Year 3 and 4 Previous Years Work

Spring 2020 - We all had a great visit from Jed, our Ancient Roman visitor and the children had lots of fun participating in soldier drills as well as exploring lots of the replica articles that he had brought in, including lots of different spears, helmets and clothing. great fun and incredibly informative!

We have started our work this term with a wonderful picture book: Leon and the Place between. This has really given them some inspiration which has led us into work in our Science topic of Electricity and in listening and appreciation in music. In maths we have looked at fair and unfair with a range of sweet array problems.

Our Author focus for the first part of this Spring term is Anne Fine with many many fun and exciting titles, and Andy stanton's Mr Gum series.

Children really loved trying out the books from last term - Anthony Horowitz including the Diamond Brothers series.

Top tip:
Something you can easily do at home is explore times tables through sweets and other objects!

Here there are 3 rows of 3 so 3x3=9. This helps children to visualise their times tables.
The class thoroughly enjoyed the Autumn term topics of the oceans and seas with the wonderful book: Flotsam enhancing their imaginations. They were thoroughly inspired by the Egyptians and had a lot of fun learning about this fascinating Ancient culture which led to lots of great work across the curriculum.  For remembrance children wrote some effective poems which looked wonderful on the wooden crosses alongside their amazing artwork of poppies influenced by Georgia O'Keeffe.

We have been enjoying exploring the wonderful illustrations in the book Flotsam. Lots of great observations and description have come from this book. We have also been learning about the oceans around the world. We looked at the Great Barrier reef and imagined that we were diving and exploring under the sea. We have also compared the Red Sea with the North sea.

Now we are enjoying studying Ancient Egyptians. The class loved performing: Pharaohs dream explained from Joseph's Technicolour Dream coat musical, in our Harvest Festival in church. We had looked at how the seasons in Ancient Egypt were based on the Nile and we created our own model of the Nile flooded. Soon after children observed that the water had all evaporated! we had our own drought. This gave way to lots of discussion about what plants need to grow and the impact of droughts on people.

Children enjoyed the trip to Creswell Crags as part of the work we were doing on Early history including the Stone Age. We learnt survival skills such as shelter making and hunting. Linking with our Science we also sorted a variety of different rocks based on their properties.

Here are some of the topics we have been studying this year!

Ancient Egypt

We had a great time studying all aspects of Ancient Egyptian life. Toward the end of our topic we had a special dress up day where we faced various challenges. Everyone looked amazing!

The class have some fantastic homework over this year. These were some great Egyptian homes. More recently we have some incredible Roman shields. Looking forward to using these in our workshop this Summer term.

We have looked at the funny story of Flat Stanley and sent our own flat stanleys off around the world. He has been to many countries from Australia to the United Arab Emirates and Canada. He must be exhausted!

Picture
The class made some superb tiles using some special Ancient Egyptian Gods / images such as Anubis or the scarab.
Picture
The class made some fantastic death masks. Using plaster of paris they shaped the face and they carefully created beards and patterns. Good job!
Picture
The Great Sugar cube pyramid challenge - these master builders had to work out how many bricks they used!

What happens to yeast when you add water and sugar to it?
We have enjoyed exploring Science through our Design Technology project. It was amazing how the yeast blew up our balloons. We learnt about micro organisms and gases. It was really exciting!

Our class made some great models using electricity. It was hard work and we had to work hard on working in partners. Sometimes our connections broke and it was very frustrating. we were proud of what we created and had a lot of fun along the way.

Maths it Fun! We explore maths with real objects and situations where we can. Keeping our maths real helps it make sense to us.
