The focus for this next 2 weeks (September 21st - October 2nd) will be on the following text by Oliver Jeffers:
English - this is for home-learning if absent from school (this is not homework)
Read / watch upto 'lets get started with a quick tour'.
Decide on what special places you would include in a tour of the Earth. What places are special to you? What are the 'highlights' to this planet that you would want to share with a visitor to Earth?
Create a leaflet to describe what makes each of these places (aim for at least 3 good sentences about each place). Create some illustrations for each of these places to go in your tour leaflet.
Extra challenge - you could create a little script and record your tour. If you have access to the computer, you could narrate a PowerPoint with pictures of the places that are special to you. Here you could add some facts about these places. Do send in what you create and share it with us.
If you are off mid to end of this first week - We will be further appreciating the natural world. Read further and look at all the amazing people and animals that populate our world. You could watch some clips from David attenburough's amazing nature programmes such as Seven worlds: Our Planet - extended trailer.
We will be thinking of additional lines that we could add to the song: Wonderful world by Louis Armstrong (see below). What places would you describe for each line of verse:
I see... and ... too
I see... and I think to myself what a wonderful world.
Maths - this is for home-learning if absent from school (this is not homework)

Welcome back year 3 / 4 children and parents!
This week our class has been continuing to focus on the theme of colour monster and emotions. Children have been working hard on their writing for their little monster books and written some fun poems about monsters in the classroom! They have also been great illustrators and created a chosen setting for their monsters emotion. With some good choice of adjectives they have described these further for the reader. In maths we have been outside hunting and using other resources to look at maths practically and physically. We have also worked hard in the classroom thinking about place value and ways to present numbers. It was a real challenge to create our portraits in just one colour but the children all showed creativity, patience and perseverence.
This half term we're focusing as a whole school on our overall 'well-being'. We will be using the same texts across the school and focusing on our character strengths to ensure that we are ready to enter into our new academic year effectively. We've started the year by reading 'The colour monster' by Anna Llenas, who is an artist, illustrator and art therapist. As an additional resource we've also been looking at film clips from the film inside out.

As we are reaching the last 2 weeks of this year, I would like you to engage in some purposeful and reflective writing. As you do so - please be vigilant in checking your spellings and punctuation and adding as much interesting detail as you can. You can choose what order you would like to do these.
Write a letter to your teacher for next year - telling them about what you have been up to during lock-down and letting them know your interests - what games, films, activities do you like most? write about some thing you are proud of during your time at home and what you have found most difficult.
Instead of the letter, you could write a fact file about yourself for your next teacher - even if they are the same teacher (me) - you will have changed since I last saw you and grown up a lot... letter template

- Create a short play script using puppets / toys / shadow puppets or you and your brother and sisters... remember a play script format has the name of the characters at the start and then what they say. You could create a play-script for a well known story or make up your own. You could video it - share it with us or load onto Purplemash blog. playscript document to support

Gaelic football
In Ireland Gaelic football is most commonly called ‘Gaelic’ or just ‘football’ or ‘gah’ (after the GAA, the Gaelic Athletic Association) and occasionally ‘Caid’ particularly in the south-west of the country.
It’s a game of 15 men against 15 on a grass pitch, a good 20 metres longer and about 10 metres wider than a soccer pitch. The funny thing about Irish football is that it is as much if not more about using your hands as your feet. The ball is kicked, caught, hand-passed and punched. While players can’t run with the ball in their hands more than three steps, they can move the ball up the field by ‘soloing’, basically the skill of running and repeatedly kicking the ball into the hands and dropping to the feet again.
If you can find a space - why not work on this skill of kicking the ball up into your hands ('soloing')- standing still and then if possible whilst walking and then running!
Why not find out about / watch some of the gaelic games and their rules.
Could you make up your own brand new game rules? What shape and size would the ball and possibly bat be? How do you pass the ball? How do you score? How many on a team? What would you call your game?

In the Hall of the Mountain King by Edvard Grieg (Peer Gynt)
BBC Discuss what you have just watched and explain that ‘In the Hall of the Mountain King’ is about a man called Peer Gynt creeping around in the home of an evil troll called the Mountain King.
Ask your child if they think Peer Gynt made it out safely (you may want to watch the end of the film again 2’10 onwards). 3. Listening task. Give out paper and pens to your child. As you watch and listen again, this time to the full orchestral performance film rather than the introduction, ask your students to draw one of the following things – a) The Hall of the Mountain King – ie his grand palace b) The Mountain King himself – i.e. a scary, ugly monster c) Peer Gynt running away down a twisty path d) The full story, featuring all of the above!
As they work on this, play the track or film over and over. 4.
Finally, tell the story of Peer Gynt. Here’s a quick version: Peer Gynt is the son of a wealthy family. When his father dies he inherits a great fortune but quickly spends it all and finds himself penniless. Instead of being unhappy he chooses to wander the world as a poet. Every time something happens to him, he writes home to his mother but often his adventures seem too fantastical to be true!

Science - Aims: explore gases. & resource sheet
The Earth’s surface air fills every available space, even those tiny spaces between and within solid objects. But what evidence is there of this? Provide children with a variety of solids in containers (soil, stones, marbles). With a magnifying glass in hand if you have one or Ipad apps or just looking closely, ask children to investigate what happens as they slowly pour water over them. Bubbles of air/gas escape as water fills the spaces. Where do the bubbles come from? (From the gaps between the solids.) In a bowl of water, submerge a sponge and squeeze it. Can they explain what is happening? Where are the bubbles coming from? (From the spaces and gaps within the sponge.) Ask children to record what they have observed through annotated drawings using the table in the session resource. Encourage the children to look closely using magnifying glasses if you have them, make their sketches as detailed as they can and describe what they have seen using scientific terms where possible.

Spring 2020 - We all had a great visit from Jed, our Ancient Roman visitor and the children had lots of fun participating in soldier drills as well as exploring lots of the replica articles that he had brought in, including lots of different spears, helmets and clothing. great fun and incredibly informative!
We have started our work this term with a wonderful picture book: Leon and the Place between. This has really given them some inspiration which has led us into work in our Science topic of Electricity and in listening and appreciation in music. In maths we have looked at fair and unfair with a range of sweet array problems. |
Our Author focus for the first part of this Spring term is Anne Fine with many many fun and exciting titles, and Andy stanton's Mr Gum series.
Children really loved trying out the books from last term - Anthony Horowitz including the Diamond Brothers series. |
Top tip:
Something you can easily do at home is explore times tables through sweets and other objects! Here there are 3 rows of 3 so 3x3=9. This helps children to visualise their times tables. |
The class thoroughly enjoyed the Autumn term topics of the oceans and seas with the wonderful book: Flotsam enhancing their imaginations. They were thoroughly inspired by the Egyptians and had a lot of fun learning about this fascinating Ancient culture which led to lots of great work across the curriculum. For remembrance children wrote some effective poems which looked wonderful on the wooden crosses alongside their amazing artwork of poppies influenced by Georgia O'Keeffe.

Autumn term
We have been enjoying exploring the wonderful illustrations in the book Flotsam. Lots of great observations and description have come from this book. We have also been learning about the oceans around the world. We looked at the Great Barrier reef and imagined that we were diving and exploring under the sea. We have also compared the Red Sea with the North sea.
Now we are enjoying studying Ancient Egyptians. The class loved performing: Pharaohs dream explained from Joseph's Technicolour Dream coat musical, in our Harvest Festival in church. We had looked at how the seasons in Ancient Egypt were based on the Nile and we created our own model of the Nile flooded. Soon after children observed that the water had all evaporated! we had our own drought. This gave way to lots of discussion about what plants need to grow and the impact of droughts on people.

Children enjoyed the trip to Creswell Crags as part of the work we were doing on Early history including the Stone Age. We learnt survival skills such as shelter making and hunting. Linking with our Science we also sorted a variety of different rocks based on their properties.
We have enjoyed exploring Science through our Design Technology project. It was amazing how the yeast blew up our balloons. We learnt about micro organisms and gases. It was really exciting!
Our class made some great models using electricity. It was hard work and we had to work hard on working in partners. Sometimes our connections broke and it was very frustrating. we were proud of what we created and had a lot of fun along the way. |

A great Greek week was had with our student teacher Miss Cioca. At the end of the week we celebrated with a special role play day in costume. The class enjoyed role playing Greek myths, painting pandora's box and writing some super sentences to go with them. In the afternoon we had our own mini olympics. Some great performances on the javelin, speed jump and long jump were observed. To complete the day we had an Egyptian feast. Everyone loved trying different food and making their own houmous.
