What things will you try hard at improving this year?

The ice was hazardous to drive on. I felt a complete idiot!
It is doubtful that I will win the Lotto this week.

Discuss how you would feel about this! Scared? Excited about what you might do or see on this adventure? Interested in where you might go? worried that you might not be able to cope with the challenge?
Look at the different jobs needed for the crew. Act out the roles. Which would you fancy? What strengths do you think you need to do this job? What would make you good at it?

Listen to the sounds in each of these - what can you hear? How does it make you feel. What images do you have to go with it?

Look at image of boat – caught up on the icy waves – in the book – compare to this. – annotate their thoughts about the page illustration.
Read first part of chapter 1:
Examine words and phrases that make the section exciting. Choose 3 that you like the most - could be just a word or few words. can you explain why?:-
Trapped tightly,   suddenly solid sea (alliteration)
Personifying winter – winter came in the night, simile – white sheet laid over the world. Repetition - where?
Oa – It came so cold and so fast that the waves of the ocean froze as they rolled. – examine the repetition of the sound oa.
Which words help you to to share the feeling Shen is experiencing?

Friday
freeze frame, thought tracking.
think about certain moments in this chapter - waking from sleep, rescuing the crates of cargo, abandoning ship, watching as the ship is crushed flat, loading and boarding the snowmobile, encouraging the pugs to follow, being abandoned.
Try acting out one or two of these moments. Think about and share if you can - what the character might have been feeling at this moment.
This is like the moment that Shackleton's Endurance was crushed in the Antarctic ice (for real!)

Write a diary entry of events.
